Massey Students Make Their Mark at NZ CrossFit Champs

It was an outstanding weekend for our Massey High School CrossFit team at the NZ CrossFit Champs, with our students competing at a high level and delivering some impressive performances.

The team continues to grow, with three students making their CrossFit Champs debuts and all three stepping up to the challenge.

There were plenty of highlights across the weekend, including Leonidas winning a WOD featuring double unders, an area that has traditionally been a challenge for him. Emalia (Mia) produced an exceptional performance, completing bar muscle-ups — something she could not do just two weeks ago — and went on to record two event wins.

Karen delivered a strong performance in the lifting WOD, showcasing her strength and determination against a highly competitive field. Malachi successfully completed his rope climbs and chest-to-bar movements, while Akira showed tremendous determination, competing despite recently being very unwell with the flu.

The team’s results were:

  • 1st – Akira | 14–15 Division

  • 2nd – Leonidas | 16–17 Division

  • 4th – Emalia (Mia) | 16–17 Division – just one point from third

  • 6th – Karen | 15–16 Division

  • 6th – Malachi | 14–15 Division

The performances were made even more impressive by the level of competition, with Massey receiving plenty of recognition during the livestreams throughout the weekend.

There is little time to rest, however. The team will be back into training on Tuesday as they prepare for NZ Secondary School Weightlifting Nationals this weekend, where the team — joined by several more Massey students — will compete as part of the final events of Tournament Week.

Congratulations to the entire team on an outstanding weekend of competition. Your hard work, determination and continued growth are something to be proud of.
