Keeping Our School Community Safe
Important reminders for student drivers to help keep our school, neighbours, and wider community safe.
Student Drivers – A Privilege and a Responsibility
For many students, driving to school is an exciting milestone and an important responsibility. The privilege of bringing a motor vehicle to school applies only to students who are legally licensed to drive.
Students who choose to drive to school do so at their own risk. We expect all student drivers to operate their vehicles safely and responsibly, observing the New Zealand Road Code at all times and showing consideration for other road users, pedestrians, our neighbours, and the wider community.
A reminder that students on a restricted licence are not permitted to transport other students, in accordance with New Zealand law.
Parking Responsibly
Students are not permitted to park on school grounds and must ensure they park legally and respectfully in surrounding streets.
We continue to receive concerns regarding vehicles blocking driveways and footpaths. Please remember that it is illegal to park in a way that blocks access to or from a driveway, or to park over and obstruct a footpath.
Parking over footpaths creates a significant safety risk for both Massey High School students and students from neighbouring primary schools. When footpaths are blocked, pedestrians are often forced onto the road to navigate around parked vehicles, creating a serious hazard.
Please be aware that parking illegally may result in infringement notices being issued, and in some cases, vehicles may be towed.
School Entrance and Bus Bay Safety
We also wish to remind all drivers that the Massey High School entrance is not a turning bay. Stopping, waiting, or turning in this area creates unnecessary hazards for students and motorists, particularly during busy morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times.
The yellow-lined area to the left of the school entrance is a designated turning lane into the school and must not be used for parking.
To ensure the safe movement of students and buses:
- Private vehicles are not permitted through the school gates between 2.30pm and 3.30pm.
- There is to be no parking in the bus bays between 2.00pm and 3.30pm.
These restrictions help ensure school buses can arrive and depart safely while students are entering and leaving the school grounds.
Compliance and Safety
Any flagrant misuse of a vehicle or breaches of the law may be referred directly to Police.
We appreciate the support of students, parents, and caregivers in helping maintain a safe environment for everyone. By driving responsibly, parking legally, and respecting our neighbours, we can work together to keep our school community safe.
