Starting off with the amazing performance of our Sublimitas Choir at The Auckland Town Hall on Tuesday of last week. As always at the Big Sing, Massey High School showed that we are up there with the best. The hours of dedication and practice – combined with the sheer talent in the choir, and the expertise of our Choir Director Clare Martin – saw Sublimitas walk away with an award for their rendition of ‘Them Bones’ and also being selected as a reserve choir for the Upper North Island Cadenza. The Big Sing is a huge competition – 87 choirs performed this year in Auckland. It was amazing to see the finished result on stage in such an amazing venue having seen the performance just starting to come together many weeks ago at the choir camp.
Success in the arts came again in the weekend at the Tangata Beats Regional Finals. We had two groups performing – Eunoia and Teuila. Teuila came 2nd overall (meaning they are now in the running to go to the National Finals in Wellington), as well as Best Song, Best Vocals, Best Instrumentalist, and Pasifika Festival Rising Stars.
Some may have seen Massey High School on Seven Sharp on Monday Night. The team from TVNZ was in last week filming a story which centered on the amazing CrossFit programme we have here at Massey High School and the incredible staff members who make it possible – Luke and Teresa Kanuta. For those who haven’t seen it, the item is on our school Facebook page. The story also highlighted the amazing achievement of Akira Taingahue who has qualified for the CrossFit Games in San Jose, California.
Uniform
We are now in the final two weeks of the Term and Auckland weather is making a return to form. However, a reminder to students that rain or cold does not provide license to wear incorrect uniform items. School jackets (a new model is available) can be worn, puffer jackets etc. can not. Sandals can still be worn by students if they wish however, socks with them are still a no go. If students wish to wear socks, then they must be worn with shoes.
The last two weeks is also a time to remind students of expectations around punctuality, attendance, and respecting the right of others to learn. Should a student be facing issues that may impact on these, please encourage them to reach out to their Deans prior to it becoming a disciplinary matter.
For senior students, assessments should be the priority. Submission of quality work is central to this. It is great to see submission rates improving across the school, meaning more students are now willing to submit work, gain feedback, and learn from errors – opportunities that aren’t open to them if they simply avoid handing in work. Students should not be afraid of experiencing failure at times, encourage them to make their best attempt so they can learn and grow.
Finally, our Annual Open Night was held on Tuesday with huge numbers coming through the school. Again, the stars on the night were our student guides who provided unfiltered insight into their experience at Massey High School as they led tour groups around the school. A huge thank you to all students that helped on the night, whether guiding groups or demonstrating subject areas, you showcased what is on offer at our school in a way that nothing else can. We are expecting continued growth next year.
