Principal's Pānui
16 August 2025
It’s a pleasure to start the Pānui acknowledging the success of our netball and hockey teams as they finish at the pinnacle of their respective seasons.
Our Massey High Premier Girls are champions of the Waitakere Netball Premier 1B competition – they’ve worked incredibly hard all season, with that hard work paying off in the final. Through it all, they’ve not lost sight of the importance of playing the game for the right reasons, and the importance of sportsmanship. Indeed, the Principal of their opposition remarked on the amazing character and sportsmanship of the team and their supporters. A huge thanks to Arielle Renata and Elaine Curtis for their work with the team.
Our Hockey Girls First XI finished their season unbeaten – coming out as winners of their division in the North Harbour Secondary Schools competition. The girls will be off to tournament in a couple of weeks. A huge thanks here to their coaches Julie Meyer and Amy Jamieson for their amazing work all season.
As a side note - our Senior A team also had an amazing season – finishing as runners-up in their competition. Thank you to Diaz Ketaraka, Kalani Matthes, and Amanda Rogers for their work with them.
Arts Week
This takes place next week, with a number of events showcasing the talent across the arts. From film, to murals, to music there is something for everyone. Arts week will be a little unusual this year given that one of the showpiece events, the Music Soiree, will be postponed to Monday 1st September (due to PPTA Industrial Action below). All tickets purchased for Wednesday remain valid for the new date.
Tongan Language Week coincides with Arts Week, adding another layer of celebration and engagement through the week.
PPTA Industrial Action
As notified on Thursday, the Board have made the decision to close the school for instruction on Wednesday 20th August following the PPTA’s notification of a full strike on that day. This decision has been made in the interests of health and safety. A reminder for the students sitting the Level 2 Te Ao Haka assessment, that will still take place on that day as NZQA are unable to move the assessment date.
Further confirmation of industrial action will be sent out early next week, but as a heads up the PPTA have advised our Board that its member teachers will not teach, instruct, or supervise students in certain year groups through the week beginning Monday 15th September.
The following year levels will be affected by this:
- Monday 15th September - Years 12 and 13. Note however that Massey High School has a prescheduled Teacher Only day on Monday 15th September.
- Tuesday 16th September - Year 11
- Wednesday 17th September - Year 10
- Thursday 18th September - Year 9
Specific arrangements for each of those days will be confirmed by separate newsletter to all parents/caregivers early next week.
Remember that Monday 18th August is Massey High Day – a mid-term break, with school closed for all on that day. We hope that all students and staff enjoy the long weekend.
