Principal's Pānui

10 June 2025

With three weeks of Term Two remaining, we are already looking ahead to 2026. On Thursday and Friday, we had Year 8s from across all of our contributing schools in at Massey. They experienced ‘a day in life,’ having a taste of secondary school mixed with fun activities. We had a full turnout on each day, which bodes well for our roll for 2026.

The day could not have happened without the superb work from our Year 9 students who worked tirelessly across both days. They were brilliant ambassadors for our school and made our Year 8s feel welcome.

As you may be aware, enrolments for 2026 are now open. This includes out of zone enrolments. Due to our forecast growth, the Board has limited the number of out-of-zone enrolments at Year 9 to 25 places. If you have a younger child coming through, please make sure you get your enrolment application in as early as possible.

Our roll growth classrooms (first wave) have now received their decking, with work commencing on access and network connection. They are on track for handover to the school at the beginning of Term 3.

In the vein of planning for the future, Massey played host to over 50 Auckland Secondary School Teacher Trainees on Wednesday (We have two training in the programme). They spent the day here gaining valuable professional learning from our expert teaching and learning team. The value of teachers trained in a school can’t be overstated. Please keep an eye out on our social media/website for information about in-school teacher training if you are interested (or know someone who might be). The value added by a teacher who has links to Massey High School is considerable.

On the sporting front, it was great to get in to see our younger rugby players exhibit their skills. Our Youth 14 teams both played at home on Saturday morning. There were many encouraging signs for the future of rugby at Massey. Youth 14 Black had a resounding win over Long Bay College. Whilst their colleagues in Youth 14 Gold couldn’t follow up with a win over Westlake they did have a very good second half. Our Second XV played some of the best rugby of their season against Whangaparaoa, leading at the half. Our First XV last week had a good confidence boosting bonus point win over Takapuna Grammar (they followed this up with a hard-fought win over Mahurangi).

As mentioned above, there are three weeks to go. This means there is a lot on for our students. As always assessment deadlines are key. Our Academic Leaders are speaking to students during the week about meeting deadlines, managing time, and studying. Students need to get into the habit of submitting their best effort on time, realizing that mistakes or failure are part of developing and growing, provided you take the time to see where you can improve.

Three weeks to go also means that the simple things must continue to be done well – uniform, punctuality, and preparedness for class.

This week, the highlight will be seeing our choir in action at Big Sing on Wednesday. Of particular note will be the piece they perform composed by former Head Boy Metileilani Alo (2011).

Parent/Teacher meetings for our senior students take place on Wednesday. If you have not yet booked times to see teachers, bookings are still open.
