Joud Al Kaki (class of 2025), Shadman Amiry, Mutien Afemata and Zephaniah Lai

Tuesday 21st April was a night of celebration, with Joud Al Kaki (class of 2025), Shadman Amiry, Mutien Afemata and Zephaniah Lai receiving their First Foundation Scholarships at the Night of Firsts Awards Ceremony. The Scholarship is a life-changing four-year programme, valued at $28,000 and four years of mentoring. Rachiel Vea (class of 2022) was also present to celebrate gaining her Business Degree and now starting her journey towards her Masters.

Shadman has written some words about his experience so far:
“As a current Year 13 student at Massey High School, I am honoured to share a recent achievement in my academic journey.

I recently attended the First Foundation Ceremony, an event celebrating students who have been awarded the First Foundation Scholarship. I first found out about this scholarship from my teacher in 2025, who encouraged me to apply and supported me through the process. Out of many applications from across New Zealand, I was proud to be one of the four students selected from Massey High School for 2026.

This achievement was not possible without the generous support of the Dines Family Charitable Trust, who has sponsored our students at MHS. Their generosity has opened new doors to success and has given me the confidence to focus harder on my academic goals.

The event itself was an exceptional experience. Standing in a room with high-achieving students from all over New Zealand was an inspiring and rare experience. Having some of my amazing teachers there to share the moments made it even more special. It reminded me that I am backed by people who believe in my potential and are always there to support me.

This scholarship has shown me that hard work truly pays off, and I look forward to making the most of this opportunity
Jimmy Watkins
10MPE

A huge congratulations to Jimmy Watkins (10MPE) on an outstanding season with Muriwai Junior Surf Life Saving.

At this year’s prizegiving, Jimmy was recognised with both the Under 14 Spirit Award and Rookie of the Year — a reflection of his positive attitude, dedication to training, and willingness to give everything a go.

He also put in an impressive performance at Oceans, reaching multiple semi-finals and representing himself with pride throughout the competition.

We’re proud to see such hard work and perseverance being recognised. Well done, Jimmy — an exciting future lies ahead as you step up into the senior ranks next season.

Harveer Talwar’s (Youth MP for Upper Harbour) Parliament TripWritten by Harveer.

Over the three days, the Youth Parliament taught me so much about how our government works. Working alongside Cameron Brewer MP, I didn't just observe politics but got to be part of it in ways I never expected.

One of the biggest moments was meeting Prime Minister Rt Hon Christopher Luxon and Minister for Youth Development Hon James Meager. Talking to them showed me that even the busiest leaders will make time to listen to young people's concerns.

The select committees were where I learned the most. We had to make real policy decisions on issues like youth gambling. Sitting around those tables and debating solutions, I understood how complex governing is. You can't just say what you want; you have to consider costs, different groups' needs, and what will actually work.

Stuff news picked up my speech about fixing the education system, which was a great surprise. I discussed how we need to prepare students better for real life, not just exams. But what mattered more was what I learned from others, especially hearing from Youth MPs across New Zealand about how different their challenges are from ours in Upper Harbour.

This experience changed how I see politics. It's not just about speeches and arguments. It's about listening, understanding the details, and working with people you might disagree with.

I'm coming back with new ideas about improving things in Upper Harbour. I'm more convinced than ever that young people need to be a part of these conversations. As Chairperson of the Upper Harbour Youth Advisory Panel, I'm committed to ensuring our youth voices continue to be heard.

Thank you to everyone who made this opportunity possible. I'm proud to have represented our community, Massey High School, and I look forward to sharing more about what I've learned. This is not the end of our engagement, it's only the beginning.
